Procter & Gamble’s Children’s Safe Drinking Water programme has donated enough of its powdered purification sachets to clean 10-billion litres of water around the world. (Images: P&G’s Children’s Safe Drinking Water)By Play Your Part reporterSince 2004, American multinational company Procter & Gamble (P&G) has been distributing its sachets of water-purifying powder across the globe through the Children’s Safe Drinking Water programme. In 11 years, the sachets have made 10-billion litres of water clean and drinkable – six billion of those litres in 39 African countries. Now the company is bringing its technology to South Africa, partnering with local relief organisation Gift of the Givers to distribute the sachets. To celebrate the purification of the 10-billionth litre of water and launch the project locally, the Children’s Safe Drinking Water programme held its first event in South Africa at Thabotona Primary School in Tsietsi informal settlement, Ekurhuleni, earlier this month. At the event, rapper and TV personality ProVerb demonstrated to schoolchildren how one sachet can purify 10 litres of dirty water in just 30 minutes – a day’s supply for a family of five.Khululiwe Mabaso, P&G’s director for corporate social investment in sub-Saharan Africa, said lack of access to clean drinking water was a global problem. “This crisis is particularly prevalent in Africa, with 319-million people in sub-Saharan Africa lacking access to improved drinking water.”Mabaso said the water purifier came out of P&G laundry detergent research. “Each four-gram packet, which uses powder technology, can purify 10 litres of heavily contaminated water wherever it is needed, which is enough clean water for a family of five for a day.”She added that the packets are easy to transport, and require only a bucket, a cloth and a stir stick to complete the purification process in 30 minutes. “With the assistance of our 150 partners in 75 countries around the world, we have helped provide the power of clean drinking water to millions of people who need it most.”ACCESS TO CLEAN WATERAccess to clean water is a global emergency. Unicef estimates that 1.8-billion people globally drink contaminated water.Water-related diseases, such as typhoid, bilharzia and cholera, affect countless African communities. Stagnant water is a breeding site for mosquitos, which spread malaria, yellow fever and dengue.Children are particularly affected by this scourge. Diarrhoeal disease, usually caused by poor water quality, hygiene and sanitation, is the third leading cause of death among children under five. It is estimated that almost 340 000 children globally die from these diseases every year.Mabaso explained that clean water can also increase productivity in communities. “It means more people can work. It enhances productivity at individual, household, community and national workforce levels. In fact, the World Health Organisation has estimated that every $1 invested in clean water, sanitation and hygiene generates $4 in increased productivity, which enables sustainable and equitable economic growth.”CHILDREN’S SAFE DRINKING WATER PROGRAMMEThe Children’s Safe Drinking Water Programme has pledged to help people purify 15-billion litres of clean water globally by 2020.“That’s five billion more litres of clean water in just four years to assist in achieving one of the United Nation’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals – ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all,” said Mabaso.
Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest As populations of herbicide resistant weeds continue to grow, sound management practices are more critical than ever to keep these weeds under control. Fall herbicide applications are good tool for controlling existing weeds after harvest, which will provide a weed free field in early spring the following year.According to Mark Loux, OSU Weed Specialist, “Even where the herbicides lack residual, the fall treatment seems to enable more effective control of marestail the following season. In some cases, it’s probable that you don’t even know how much the fall treatment helps out, but our research shows that more often than not it does.”University research also suggests that most fall applied herbicides provide minimal residual control in the spring and that the greatest benefit from residual herbicides is gained from a spring application. The timing of fall herbicide applications is important to ensure control of existing weeds.“In our research, herbicides seem to be effective for control of winter annuals and biennials well into December. The rate of plant death can slow considerably, but this is not a problem since weeds just have to die by early spring. Control of perennials typically declines in late November or early December though, depending upon weather,” writes Loux.University experts have published several excellent articles on this subject that go into great detail, all of which are available online. Below are some effective fall herbicide treatments recommended by Ohio State University research. Keep in mind; it is important to make application decisions based on the weeds present and the crop to be planted the following spring.Any Crop Next Spring: -Glyphosate + 2,4-DSoybeans next spring: Canopy EX or DF + 2,4-D Glyphosate + 2,4-D Metribuzin + 2,4-D (excluding dandelions)Corn next spring: Basis + 2,4-D Glyphosate + 2,4-D Simazine + 2,4-D (except dandelion)For more information about fall weed control check out these articles from Purdue and Ohio State.
We’ve been raving about Shazam for years at ReadWriteWeb, but even over the past 6 months the service has taken itself to a new level. In September, Shazam launched improved music discovery features along with a fresh user interface for its iPhone and iPod touch apps. Then in January, Shazam added a new option for interacting with a song it’s identified: listen in Spotify. As Marshall Kirkpatrick noted at the time:“A seamless ability to listen to entire albums of whatever musician or group is playing on the speakers in a room you’re in, with just a click or two and some awesome music identification technology, is truly incredible.”My UX: Music on Mobile is a Pleasure! The increased control over what music we listen to, together with enhanced discoverability of new music, are two of the main user experience trends in music on smartphones. Both of those things have significantly enhanced my music-listening pleasure. They’ve increased the range of music I listen to and have given me the opportunity to listen to music anywhere I go (although expensive bandwidth is still an issue where I live). It’s by no means a perfect user experience yet, however. There’s still work to do on fleshing out back catalogs in music apps – the online music companies continue to work through this issue with record companies. Also, syncing your music between devices is not always hassle-free. Finally, tracking your listening habits and having that data given back to you in a usable format is not universally solved – despite the groundbreaking work of Last.fm and its Audioscrobbler.Overall though, I’m very happy with the state of music on mobile devices! Let us know in the comments about your own user experience.Photo credit: mari moon Tags:#Series#UX Evolutions#web We’re living in an exciting era for media. The user experience of consuming (and producing) media is changing rapidly, as new devices take hold of the consumer market. Smartphones, tablets, Internet TVs, eReaders, and more. It isn’t just new devices either. The content we’re consuming is beginning to change too. For example, it’s only natural that the type of television program you consume on a tablet device can – and increasingly will – be different to traditional television.Today we’re starting a new series on ReadWriteWeb that will explore how the user experience (UX) of media is evolving. Over the coming weeks we’ll look at television, movies, music, books, blogs, news, art – anything that is ‘content’ on the Web. In today’s post, we’re going to explore the new UX of music on smartphones.I better start by explaining what I mean by “user experience.” It’s a web design term, but I’m using it in a broader sense to mean the experience of using a product. Wikipedia defines user experience as “how a person feels about using a product, system or service.” It goes on to state:“User experience is subjective in nature, because it is about an individual’s feelings and thoughts about the system. User experience is dynamic, because it changes over time as the circumstances change.” Online music has had a particularly fruitful couple of years in terms of innovation. As I explained in January, new subscription-based music services like MOG, Rdio and Spotify have shaken up the online music market with their all-you-can-eat plans and compelling mobile apps. Meanwhile other services, such as online music stalwart Pandora, continue to add new features and expand into new markets. More Control Over The Songs You PlayPerhaps the biggest change in the user experience of online music over the past few years is that you can now control what you listen to.With last.fm and Pandora, leaders in the previous wave of online music, you had limited control over what songs would play. Those apps were modeled on radio, where you don’t know what song is coming next. With the new wave – MOG, Rdio and Spotify – you can listen to entire albums. What’s more, you don’t need to own the albums. You can subscribe to one of those services for as little as $5 per month and listen to an impressive catalog of new and old music. Today I listened to the brand new Strokes album on MOG, even though I don’t own it.Being able to choose what I listen to and explore new music without having to buy it first, is very liberating to a music fan such as myself.Slicker Mobile Apps & Enhanced DiscoverabilityThe other major change in recent years is the vast improvement in functionality of mobile music applications. It almost goes without saying that MOG, Rdio and Spotify all have outstanding mobile apps. But let’s look at another mobile music app that not only has a wonderful UX, but enables you to discover even more new music: Shazam. It’s an app that can identify the name of a song, no matter where you hear it. For example, if you hear a song in a shop – simply launch Shazam on your phone and it identifies the music. richard macmanus Related Posts Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…

The squad is pretty much the same, we’ve brought in a few quality players, as you can see, and obviously we’re out of the Europa League now and we go back to one game a week so we get to work on the training pitch and hopefully we can kick on from there.”
