Required fields are marked * Pac-12 teams in football and several other fall sports will only play conference games this season because of the coronavirus pandemic, its CEO Group announced Friday. The decision means the UCLA Bruins football team won’t be playing New Mexico State Aug. 29 at the Rose Bowl — or Hawaii Sept. 5 in Honolulu or San Diego State Sept. 19 in San Diego. The USC football team will not face Alabama Sept. 5 in Arlington, Texas, to open its football season, or play host to Notre Dame Nov. 28 or New Mexico Sept. 12 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The decision made following a meeting of the Pac-12 CEO Group Friday will result in the start dates for the impacted sports being delayed. The CEO Group made clear that it hopes to play football and all other fall sports provided the conference can meet the health and safety needs of its athletes and obtain appropriate permissions from state and local health authorities. The Pac-12 has developed a series of potential fall sport scheduling models including conference-only schedules and delayed season starts. Details on conference-only schedules will be announced no later than July 31.The decision also affects men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. The conference is also delaying the start of mandatory athletic activities until a series of health and safety indicators, which have recently trended in a negative direction, provide sufficient positive data to enable a move to a second phase of return-to-play activities.The NCAA announced that mandatory organized team activities for football can begin Monday.Pac-12 athletes who choose not to participate in intercollegiate athletics during the 2020-21 academic year because of safety concerns about COVID-19 will continue to have their scholarships honored by their universities and will remain in good standing with their team.“Confronted with an unprecedented global pandemic, in going to a conference-only schedule for fall sports in 2020, the Pac-12 Conference is acting responsibly on behalf of the health and safety of all of our student- athletes, coaches and staff while trying to do everything possible so we can compete this year,” USC athletic director Mike Bohn said.Bohn said he has communicated Friday’s decision to the athletic directors as Alabama, Notre Dame and New Mexico “and there is no additional information to share at this time.”UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond said his university “fully supports today’s decision by the Pac-12 CEO Group to delay the start of mandatory athletic activities and to limit fall seasons for several sports to conference-only competition.”“The health and safety of our student-athletes, staff and fans is paramount, and this move affords us the greatest level of flexibility to adapt and evolve in real time, in the midst of a very fluid situation,” Jarmond said. The Pac-12’s move to conference-only play comes one day after a similar announcement from the 14-team Big Ten Conference.“The health and safety of our student-athletes and all those connected to Pac-12 sports continues to be our number one priority,” said Pac- 12 Commissioner Larry Scott.“Our decisions have and will be guided by science and data, and based upon the trends and indicators over the past days, it has become clear that we need to provide ourselves with maximum flexibility to schedule, and to delay any movement to the next phase of return-to-play activities.” STAFF REPORT First Heatwave Expected Next Week HerbeautyHow To Lose Weight & Burn Fat While You SleepHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeautyInstall These Measures To Keep Your Household Safe From Covid19HerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeauty9 Of The Best Family Friendly Dog BreedsHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeautyHe Is Totally In Love With You If He Does These 7 ThingsHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeauty10 Most Influential Women In HistoryHerbeautyHerbeautyHerbeauty6 Lies You Should Stop Telling Yourself Right NowHerbeautyHerbeauty STAFF REPORT Pasadena’s ‘626 Day’ Aims to Celebrate City, Boost Local Economy Make a comment faithfernandez More » ShareTweetShare on Google+Pin on PinterestSend with WhatsApp,Virtual Schools PasadenaHomes Solve Community/Gov/Pub SafetyCitizen Service CenterPASADENA EVENTS & ACTIVITIES CALENDARClick here for Movie Showtimes Community Newscenter_img Sports Pac-12 Limits 2020 Football Schedule To Conference Opponents; Bruins Won’t Play New Mexico Aug. 29 in Rose Bowl Separately, California community colleges shift all sports to spring season for 2020-21 academic year STAFF REPORT Published on Friday, July 10, 2020 | 7:47 pm EVENTS & ENTERTAINMENT | FOOD & DRINK | THE ARTS | REAL ESTATE | HOME & GARDEN | WELLNESS | SOCIAL SCENE | GETAWAYS | PARENTS & KIDS Name (required)  Mail (required) (not be published)  Website  Top of the News Business News More Cool Stuff CITY NEWS SERVICE/STAFF REPORT Pasadena Will Allow Vaccinated People to Go Without Masks in Most Settings Starting on Tuesday Get our daily Pasadena newspaper in your email box. E coli cases prompt beef recall by Illinois firm

first_img Meanwhile, CDC officials who are monitoring a Salmonella outbreak linked by epidemiologic investigations to ConAgra’s Banquet pot pies said in an Oct 12 update that isolates of Salmonella enterica serotype I,4,[5],12:i:- had been collected from at least 174 patients in 32 states. At least 33 people have been hospitalized. Salmonellosis typically causes fever and nonbloody diarrhea that resolves within a week. Health officials are concerned about what appears to be a surge in the number of ground beef recalls for E coli O157:H7 contamination. A few days after the Topps Meat recall, Cargill Meat Solutions of Butler, Wis., recalled about 845,000 pounds of frozen ground beef because of possible E coli contamination. The recall was announced after Minnesota health officials linked three illness reports to the company’s beef patties, which were sold through Sam’s Club stores. Though investigators have not isolated the outbreak strain from the pot pies or the company’s Marshall, Mo., production facility, the company recalled all varieties of Banquet pot pies on Oct 12 to simplify its message that consumers should not eat the pot pies. The frozen beef patties, sold under the Topps and Sam’s Choice brands, bear the establishment number “Est. 5712” on their package labels, the FSIS said. Oct 12 CIDRAP News story “ConAgra recalls pot pies as Salmonella cases rise” The FSIS did not specify the number of E coli cases or their locations. In a statement today, J&B Meats said the beef patties were made for Topps Meat Co., though J&B is not a subsidiary of Topps. The latter company, based in Elizabeth, N.J., in late September announced a recall of 21.7 million pounds of ground beef because of potential E coli contamination. The company subsequently announced it couldn’t survive the financial blow and was going out of business. In the Topps outbreak, the number of related illness cases has risen to 38 in eight states, according to an Oct 11 statement from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most of the patients sickened in the Topps outbreak are from the Northeast. Of 26 people for whom hospitalization status was known, 17 (65%) were hospitalized, and one had HUS. See also: E coli O157:H7 produces a toxin that causes diarrhea, often bloody, and abdominal cramps but usually no fever. The illness usually resolves in 5 to 10 days, but it can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), potentially leading to kidney failure or death, in 2% to 7% of patients.center_img Oct 11 CDC update on illness linked to Topps E coli outbreakhttp://www.cdc.gov/ecoli/2007/october/100207.html Oct 15, 2007 (CIDRAP News) – An Illinois company has recalled about 173,500 pounds of frozen ground beef products because of a possible connection with Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections, as the number of cases in other recent foodborne illness outbreaks continued to mount. Oct 13 FSIS recall noticehttp://www.fsis.usda.gov/News_&_Events/Recall_045_2007_Release/index.asp Oct 15 J&B Meats statementhttp://www.jbmeats.com/ Oct 12 CDC update on illnesses linked to ConAgra Salmonella outbreakhttp://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/4512eyeminus.html ConAgra has said that it believes the illnesses are probably due to undercooking by consumers. Microwave ovens vary in power, can cook products unevenly, and can lose some of their power as they age. The company also said it would revise cooking directions on packages to clarify safe preparation steps. Oct 9 CIDRAP News story “Spike in E coli–related beef recalls alarms officials” On Oct 13, J&B Meats Corp., Inc., based in Coal Valley, Ill., voluntarily recalled frozen ground sirloin and beef patties that were produced on Jun 12, 18, and 22, and were nationally distributed to retail stores, according to an Oct 13 statement from the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The company recalled the products after the FSIS received illness reports through its consumer complaint monitoring system.last_img read more

UK bulk annuity market spikes with Prudential, Northern Bank deal

first_imgThis is Prudential’s first deal in 2015, after writing £1.7bn in 2014 to become the third-largest player behind Legal & General (L&G) and Pension Insurance Corporation (PIC).The insurer, known for flirting with the UK bulk annuity market with sporadic business, said earlier this year it would continue to operate with discipline and very selectively, and that its strategy was working well.Andy Reed, director of DB solutions at Prudential, said the insurer had good aspirations in 2015 but stressed it had to be on the right terms.“We do not have a limit or target [for 2015], but it is more about if the opportunity is good for us at that given point in time,” he said.“We like the market, but we write business as it suits us. We’re not in the £3bn-4bn range, and this size of transaction is very suitable.”Reed also said the individual annuities business arm of Prudential, one of the UK’s largest providers, was not influencing the bulk annuity business strategy. The pension scheme and sponsor were advised by consultancy LCP in the latest deal.LCP said the deal was a spike in bulk annuity business in Q2 compared with Q1, joining Lehmans and one other £500m-plus deal.LCP partner Michelle Wright said the deal was also arranged to allow additional annuity policies to be added at a later date on agreed terms. The first quarter of 2015 was dominated by L&G, which wrote £644m, but Prudential and Rothesay Life have now stamped claims on Q2 with larger deals. This year’s reported business for Q1 and announcements in Q2 still lag behind levels seen in 2014, a record year for the UK market.Market participants insured more than £4bn of liabilities by April 2014, compared with £804m this year.By the end of Q2 last year, insurers reached a total of £6.9bn, a feat unlikely to be reached even with the deals announced by Prudential and Rothesay Life.Wright said, despite the 2015 market’s starting in a lumpy fashion, business levels were picking up, with strong demand from UK pension schemes.“[Last year] was characterised by large transactions [ICI (£3.6bn), TRW (£2.5bn) and Total (£1.6bn)], and this year it seemed to be a slower start,” she said. “But activity is picking up.”The record £12bn of deals in 2014 was expected to entice several other insurance companies into the market, particularly after the UK government changed defined contribution (DC) regulations that spelt a reduction in the size of the individual annuity market.UK insurer Scottish Widows announced its intention to enter the bulk space by the third quarter of 2015, a move LCP said would bring “welcomed capacity” to the market and lead to further competitive pricing. The Northern Bank Pension Scheme has secured a £680m (€932m) bulk annuity buy-in with Prudential as the insurer enters the 2015 market with the largest deal thus far.The £1.25bn pension fund secured the buy-in insurance contract to cover the majority of its pensioner members and dependants.Prudential’s win marginally surpasses the £675m deal stuck between Rothesay Life and the UK Lehman Brothers Pension Scheme last month to become the largest transaction of the year.Northern Bank provides retail banking services in Northern Ireland under the trading name of Danske Bank, and its closed defined benefit (DB) scheme supports around 5,000 members, 2,000 of which have just been insured.last_img read more

The DL is a mathematical formulation designed to calculate the target score for the team batting second in a limited overs cricket match interrupted by weather. It stopped raining and the DL came into play, giving Denmark a lifeline as they now needed just 57 off 5.2 overs to win the match. It was an uphill task for Uganda to contain the Danes, who even got an appetite for sixes. Bharaj hit one and Said another to add to only one they had got earlier, as they now needed 27 off their last 3 overs. It was soon 11 off the last 2 overs with 5 wickets remaining, and 5 off the last 6 balls. In stepped captain and and Right Arm Off Spinner Roger Mukasa for an amazing spell of bowling, in which four wickets fell as Uganda held on to win by 1 run.The win virtually assures Uganda of one of two top places needed to advance to the ICC World Cricket League Division 3 from Division 4.
