44 injured as American Airlines flight skids off runway

When landing the plane overran the runway and skidded to the edge of the Caribbean Sea, its nose less than 10 feet from the water and broken off. Passengers were immediately evacuated with 44 injured passengers taken to local hospitals, 4 of which had serious injuries, officials said.Other reports have stated that more than 90 passengers were taken to the hospital.The Boeing 737-800aircraft was substantially damaged from the incident with its wing, engine and right hand engine torn off and its fuselage cracked and main gear collapsed according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Passengers told reporters that the turbulent flight had seemed to bounce when it had landed the first time and skidded after the second landing causing baggage to drop from the overhead lockers.American Airlines said today that all passengers that had been taken to local hospitals yesterday were treated and released except for two which have been admitted for observation and treatment at area hospitals. last_img
