A member of Guyana’s national football team was on Tuesday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts slapped with 10 counts of armed robbery.Omalla Williams, 26, of Lot 83 Leopold and Breda Streets, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, was not required to plead to the indictable charges.It is alleged that on July 27, 2018 while in the vicinity of Breda Street and armed with a gun, he robbed Darlene Gaines, Joe Hughes, Christina Gaines-Sluss, Daisy Gaines-Sluss and Dennis Grant of one Samsung Galaxy S8 mobile phone valued $140,000; a quantity of medication valued $80,000; one MP3 player valued $5000; a US passport and US$2100 among other valuables.It is also alleged that Williams, while being armed with a gun, robbed Dr Guy Low on Smyth Street, Georgetown on April 24, 2018; Jannel Walters and Avil Crowther at Cross Street, Georgetown on April 27, 2018 and Rodwell Maynard at Leopold Street on April 30, 2018.Further, Williams was also accused of discharging a loaded firearm with intent to cause actual bodily harm to Damion Elliott on April 30, 2018.Reports are about 13:00h on July 27, 2018, Gaines, Hughes, Christina Gaines-Sluss, Daisy Gaines-Sluss and Dennis Grant were all in the city to do some shopping, but were robbed by Williams.According to reports, all five victims are members of the Coomacka Church of Christ, who arrived in Guyana from the USA.Darlene, Daisy, Joe and Christina were picked up at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) by Robin Collins, also of Coomacka Mines, in minibus BKK 337. They all then proceeded to Georgetown to do some shopping, and as they were proceeding east along Leopold Street, Collins slowed down at Breda Street to allow other vehicles to pass.At that point, Williams reportedly walked up to him and held him at gunpoint. The perpetrator then pulled out the bus keys, while three other suspects rushed up and relieved the other occupants in the vehicle of their belongings. The four suspects then made good their escape by running east along Leopold Street. However, based on investigations, Williams was arrested. The father of two was remanded and was expected to return to court on August 27, 2018.
