Unidentified armed assailants opened fire and lobbed a hand grenade at the home of BJP lawmaker and Muzaffarnagar riots accused Sangeet Som in Meerut early on Thursday morning. The grenade did not explode and is in the possession of security agencies, said police. Nobody was injured in the attack. “We have recovered empty cartridges and an unpinned hand grenade from the spot. Investigation is underway to identify the assailants,” said Meerut senior superintendent of police Akhilesh Kumar.Police said the assailants had allegedly followed Mr. Som home around 1 AM and opened fire a few minutes after the MLA entered the house. The driver of the attacker’s vehicle tried to barge in but was foiled by the guard at the gate. One of the attackers then hurled a grenade inside the house and fled the scene.“The grenade did not explode. We have it in our possession for examination. A dog squad and forensic teams is gathering more evidence from the spot,” the official added. A senior police officer said that matter was being investigated from all angles.Mr. Som had received similar threats two years ago, while unidentified assailants fired at Mr. Som’s house residence a several years ago. Police sources said Mr. Som had allegedly received a threatening telephone call from the Islamic State in December 2015 and 2017. The Centre had earlier provided Mr. Som with ‘Z’ category security.
