Security Council extends UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus through 15 December

Unanimously adopting resolution 1354 (2001), the Council also urged the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkish forces to lift restrictions imposed on 30 June on the mission’s operations and to restore the military status quo ante at Strovilia. Originally set up in 1964, UNFICYP is mandated to supervise ceasefire lines, maintain a buffer zone and undertake humanitarian activities on the island. As of 29 May, the Force comprised 1,216 troops and 35 civilian police supported by 40 international civilian personnel and 143 local civilian staff.
